A Large hilltop village built on the site of an Iron Age Fort

Danbury

Danbury is located in the heart of rural Essex and offers some fantastic views over the Blackwater Estuary with numerous barges and yachts floating by.

Danbury houses four churches, six primary or pre-schools, a village hall, nearly a hundred local businesses, a sports and social club and many other clubs and organised recreational activities to choose from.

The nearest airport is Stansted, which is less than 25 miles away.  Gatwick are not much more than an hour away, and the nearest train station is in Chelmsford.

Danbury is home to some expansive woodland and meadows, including Blakes Wood (National Trust) which extends to nearly 100 acres.  During Springtime it is resplendent in a sea of bluebells and is very popular with both locals and ramblers.

Danbury Country Park was created in the 13th Century to include woodlands and three lakes, which later became part of the ornamental gardens belonging to a former bishop’s residence at Danbury Palace.

The park is very accessible and exceptionally well maintained, and is [popular with dog walkers, families and ramblers, with plenty of seating and picnic areas to stop for a rest or to have a bite to eat.

The local wildlife includes ducks, coots, moorhens, grebes, carp and you may even see a kingfisher as you amble along the lakeside pathway beyond the ornamental gardens.

Late spring is a good time to see ducklings and spectacular displays of rhododendrons in the gardens.  In summer, the meadows will with wildflowers and grasses, attracting butterflies and insects.

Woodland paths offer respite from the sun in the dappled shade of ancient oaks, hornbeams and sweet chestnuts.  The park is also home to some historic structures, including that of an ice house, where ice was harvested from the lakes during the winter months and kept in storage for the palace kitchens.

Amongst the four churches within Danbury is the grade 1 listed Parish Church of St John The Baptist, dating to as far back as 1233.

The church is steeped in history and contains some wonderful wooden effigies of the crusader ‘Knights of Danbury” and carvings of various creatures on the pew ends.

Less than 4 miles away is the beautiful RHS Garden Hyde Hall, which consists of over 360 acres of some of the finest gardens in Essex.
