The inaugural ‘Thriving Community Club Conference’ by Essex County FA brought together football enthusiasts on 30th May at New Hall School, Chelmsford. This event was a beacon of inspiration for grassroots football, focusing on connection, collaboration, and development.
Aimed at nurturing sustainable grassroots clubs, the conference welcomed England Football Accredited and National League System clubs, alongside community organisations. Attendees were treated to a rich programme of expert insights, practical learning, and networking opportunities. Esteemed speakers included Charlotte Richardson, Kate Longhurst, and Paralympian Bebe Jackson, who shared invaluable experiences and best practices.
The conference delved into crucial themes shaping the future of grassroots football. Workshops and discussions highlighted the growth of female participation, inclusive environments, workforce and coach development, and the FutureFit changes. Essex County FA CEO, Brendan Walshe, opened the event, applauding the clubs’ dedication and underscoring their vital role in the community.
A standout session, ‘Journey to Inclusion,’ featured voices from disability football and inclusive sport, emphasising the importance of accessible football environments. The ‘Equal Game’ session celebrated the women’s and girls’ game, with insights from former Barclays Women’s Super League champion Kate Longhurst and others, discussing strategies to enhance female player opportunities.
Delegates also explored workforce development, volunteer recruitment, and practical coaching strategies. Sessions by Pete Sturgess and Tom Sibthorpe offered guidance on player-centred coaching and FutureFit, preparing clubs for future developments.
The conference also hosted a ‘marketplace’ area, allowing attendees to engage with football suppliers, facility partners, and community organisations, fostering networking and collaboration.
