In the heart of Chelmsford, a retired nurse is making waves of happiness with her four-legged friend. Joyce McIntosh, once a dedicated neonatal nurse, now volunteers at Broomfield Hospital alongside her golden retriever, Rosie. This dynamic duo is part of Essex Therapy Dogs, and their visits are nothing short of heartwarming.
Joyce’s journey began in Scotland, where she trained as a nurse before venturing to South Africa. It was there she discovered her passion for caring for premature babies, a calling that would define her career. Returning to the UK, Joyce continued her vocation at St John’s Hospital in Chelmsford, eventually becoming a matron and senior sister. Her career culminated at Broomfield Hospital, where she spent the majority of her working life.
Now, in her retirement, Joyce has found a new way to care for others. With Rosie by her side, she visits the hospital every few weeks, bringing joy and comfort to patients. The presence of a friendly dog can be incredibly therapeutic, and Rosie’s wagging tail and gentle nature are sure to bring smiles to many faces.
