In a heartwarming tale of resilience and generosity, 10-year-old Amber Butcher from Chelmsford has turned her challenging cancer journey into an inspiring act of kindness. With the support of her school friends, Amber raised an impressive £2,400 to donate toys to the children’s wards at Broomfield Hospital.
Amber, a student at The Beaulieu Park School, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer, at just nine years old. Her treatment required her to undergo chemotherapy, leading to extended stays in isolation on the children’s ward, where she couldn't access the playroom. However, thanks to the hospital’s dedicated play team, Amber and her younger sister, Lyla, received brand-new toys to enjoy together during these difficult times.
Moved by the generosity of others, Amber decided to give back. With the enthusiastic support of her school, including Headteacher Mrs Koller and the wider community, Amber and Lyla organised a successful cake sale and online fundraiser. Their efforts resulted in a substantial donation of toys for other young patients, bringing smiles to many faces.
Amber’s mum, Victoria, expressed her gratitude, saying, “The play team were incredible. They made sure Amber and Lyla could play together despite the isolation. We feel so lucky to have had such support from the hospital and our school community.”
Clair Dade, fundraising coordinator at Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, praised Amber's efforts, stating, “Amber’s courage is truly inspirational. This donation will bring joy to many children, and we’re so grateful to Amber, her friends, and her school for their generosity.”
Now having completed chemotherapy, Amber continues her recovery with weekly physio and hydrotherapy sessions. Her story is a testament to the power of community support and the impact of giving back. At Bond Residential, we are proud to be part of such a caring community.
