In Chelmsford, a new play area is breaking the mould by being designed with teenage girls in mind. Traditionally, public parks have catered more to boys, with facilities like football pitches and skate parks dominating the space. But now, thanks to the charity 'Make Space for Girls' (MSFG), change is afoot!
Research has shown that teenage girls are less likely to visit public parks compared to boys. Why? Because parks often lack spaces that appeal to them. Enter MSFG and their mission to create inclusive public spaces. In collaboration with Social Place, Chelmsford City Council, and Active Essex, they teamed up with Boswells School students to reimagine Central Park.
The students' vision was for a social area, not dominated by sports, but rather a welcoming space for relaxation and socialising. Their design features an open seating area, vibrant flowers, and inviting lighting, aptly named ‘Our Place’. It’s a space where everyone, especially those who might feel unwelcome in traditional park settings, can feel at ease.
This initiative is just the beginning. More ‘Our Places’ are planned across Chelmsford, with students from Chelmer Valley High School and William de Ferrers School already contributing their ideas for other locations. These projects demonstrate the power of involving young people in the design process, ensuring spaces are used and loved by those they’re intended for.
Councillor Donna Eley highlighted the importance of gender equality in public spaces, praising the project for its inclusive approach. By creating areas that appeal to everyone, particularly teenage girls and gender-diverse young people, Chelmsford is setting a precedent for parks nationwide.
