A rare opportunity awaits history enthusiasts and book lovers alike! Chelmsford Cathedral's historic library, often described as a 'hidden gem', will open its doors on September 13th as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.
Nestled just above the south porch of the Cathedral, this library is usually locked to the general public. However, thanks to the efforts of the Dean of Chelmsford, the Very Revd Dr Jessica Martin, it will now be accessible for timed tours and discussions about its rare books. This is a chance to step back in time and explore literary history.
Visitors can ascend the spiral staircase to discover the tucked-away library. Among the fascinating pieces of literature is a version of the Bible from the 1540s, believed to be one of the first printed in English. There's also a book about a Thaxted priest who famously flew the red flag, symbolic of socialism and communism, from his church tower.
The Heritage Open Days event promises a warm welcome to all visitors. The Knightbridge Library, home to numerous historic books, offers a unique glimpse into the past. Tours are 20 minutes long and run every half-hour between 10am and 2pm. To secure your spot, booking in advance is essential via the Chelmsford Heritage Open Days website.
