In a heartwarming ceremony at County Hall in Chelmsford, nine remarkable Essex residents were awarded British Empire Medals (BEMs) for their outstanding contributions to their communities. These deserving individuals were celebrated as winners in The King’s New Year Honours List for 2025, with the medals presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, on May 23.
Mrs Tolhurst eloquently expressed, "It is a reminder of what a positive impact an individual can have on those around them, by giving selflessly of their time and talents to help others." This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the recipients, each of whom has made a significant difference in their local areas.
Among the honourees, Margaret Lines, a Hatfield Heath resident since 1966, was recognised for her decades of volunteering, including over 30 years running the village playgroup. Alan Frost, a stalwart supporter of voluntary activities in Abberton and Langenhoe for more than 40 years, was also celebrated. Jackie Pell, with her long-standing service to the Halstead community, including three terms as mayor, received her well-deserved accolade.
Other notable recipients include Mike Davies, for establishing Rayleigh's museum in 2016, and Michael Keogh, who has been involved with Springfield Youth Club in Hackney since childhood. Paul Hannaford was honoured for his dedication to educating young people about the dangers of drugs and gangs since 2009. Louise Lees-Barrett, founder of REACH, was recognised for her pioneering work in equine-assisted therapy.
Kenneth Cowen's establishment of The School of Hard Knocks in 2009 to support vulnerable youth earned him a medal, while John Polley, the oldest recipient, was celebrated for his 80-year membership with the Boxted Methodist Silver Band.
Mrs Tolhurst encourages the community to continue nominating deserving individuals for future honours. At Bond Residential, we are inspired by these local heroes and are proud to serve such a vibrant community.
