In the heart of Essex, The Lion Inn in Boreham is where you'll find Ben Skinner, recently honoured as the UK's "Bar Person of the Year" at the RedCat Independent Pubs annual awards. Ben, hailing from Chelmsford, has dedicated six years to perfecting his craft at this historic 16th-century pub.
Ben's journey to becoming a cocktail connoisseur began nearly a decade ago when he first worked at The Lion Inn. It was there he discovered the European Bartender School in the USA, which led him to Miami for an intensive four-week course. He mastered 100 cocktail recipes and delved into the history of the spirits used, a knowledge he still applies today.
Starting his career as a kitchen porter while studying sports science at Essex College, Ben's interest in cocktails blossomed when he turned 18 and began bar work. After completing his bartending course and travelling, he returned to Chelmsford to manage The Bottle Bureau. Now, at The Lion Inn, Ben not only manages the bar but also plays a vital front-of-house role.
His favourite cocktail is a classic margarita, composed of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. However, he notes a growing trend in non-alcoholic mocktails, which have become a popular addition to their menu alongside traditional cocktails.
Ben's recognition as Bar Person of the Year, selected from 39 pubs in the RedCat Independent Pubs chain, underscores his engaging approach, passion for drinks, and attention to detail. For Ben, receiving this accolade is a gratifying acknowledgment of his dedication.
