As winter wanes, Essex bursts into bloom with snowdrops, offering garden enthusiasts a delightful outdoor escape. From February 7, the county's gardens open their gates for the National Garden Scheme, raising funds for nursing and health charities while showcasing a tapestry of winter flowers.
A mere six miles north of Colchester, Horkesley Hall in Little Horkesley is among the first to welcome visitors. Open on February 7 and 11, this sprawling garden boasts an ever-growing collection of named snowdrops. For just £6, adults can wander the grounds, with children entering for free. Visitors can savour soups, bacon rolls, and homemade cakes at St Peter and St Paul’s Church.
A short drive leads to Green Island Gardens in Ardleigh, opening on February 8. Its woodland paths, adorned with snowdrops, cyclamen, hellebores, and witch hazels, promise a visual feast. Entry is £10 for adults and £3.50 for children, with a tearoom offering light lunches. The garden’s flat paths ensure an easy stroll for all ages.
Chelmsford locals can visit Dragons at Boyton Cross on February 12 and 18. Here, rare snowdrops and winter shrubs create striking displays. Pre-booking is essential, with adult tickets at £5 and children entering free. Enjoy tea, coffee, and cake amidst the blooms.
Other highlights include Ultling Wick near Maldon, Brookfield in Boreham, and Grove Lodge in Saffron Walden. From crocus-carpeted meadows to town-centre walled gardens, each site offers unique winter charm.
Last year, the National Garden Scheme raised a record £3.8 million, supporting those with cancer, Parkinson’s, mental health issues, and caring responsibilities. Essex alone contributed over £142,000.
