Explore Essex's Hidden Historical Village Gem

Nestled amidst the rolling countryside of Essex lies the charming village of Stondon Massey, a place that seamlessly blends rich history with picturesque beauty. Whether you're en route to Brentwood or Chelmsford via the A414, this delightful village is well worth a detour.

Stondon Massey’s name is steeped in history, with ‘Stondon’ originating from Old English, meaning “stone hill.” This reflects the village’s early Saxon settlement on a low gravel hill, traditionally known as a “down.” The village’s unique identity is further enriched by its association with the historic 12th-century church of St Peter’s and St Paul’s, standing as a testament to its deep historical roots. The ‘Massey’ in its name harks back to Serlo de Marci, a Norman knight, weaving a tapestry of Saxon and Norman heritage.

Interestingly, the village’s main hub shifted south over time, a move attributed to the devastating plague of 1350. This historical shift is a reminder of the village's resilience and adaptability. Stondon Massey also has a quirky slice of history with its short-lived greyhound racing track at Brook Farm in 1928, known as a "flapping track."

Today, Stondon Massey thrives as a vibrant community of around 700 residents. It hosts an annual fete on the village green and was proudly named Winner of Group 4 Best Kept Village in Essex in 2006. The village is also home to some truly stunning properties, with large, elegant homes dotting the landscape.

For those considering a move to this idyllic locale, we at Bond Residential are here to help you find your dream home. Whether you're drawn by the village's history or its scenic charm, Stondon Massey offers a unique blend of past and present that’s hard to resist.
