Essex Libraries are celebrating a century of service, marking 100 years since their official establishment in 1926. From humble beginnings with the first County Library Committee meeting in May 1926 and the appointment of Essex’s first County Librarian in July of the same year, libraries have blossomed into vital community hubs. The first County Library Headquarters opened its doors in January 1927, setting the stage for a legacy of learning and community support.
Today, Essex Libraries are more than just repositories of books. They are vibrant centres that promote reading and literacy, provide access to digital resources, offer learning opportunities, and host cultural activities. They also preserve local history collections and offer welcoming spaces for people of all ages to connect, learn, and thrive.
To celebrate this remarkable milestone, a series of activities will run throughout the autumn, highlighting the evolution of Essex Libraries and their ongoing role in supporting modern communities. Under the theme ‘100 Years of Essex Libraries – Supporting the People of Essex’, the campaign promises a rich tapestry of events.
Residents can look forward to ‘100 Years, 100 Books, 100 Stories’ displays in libraries across Essex, showcasing historic photographs, customer memories, and key moments from the library service’s journey. Special exhibitions at Basildon, Chelmsford, Colchester, and Harlow libraries will delve into the unique stories of their local communities alongside the history of Essex Libraries.
Interactive activities will encourage residents to share memories, recommend books, and contribute personal stories to displays. Children can enjoy story time, trails, and craft activities inspired by different decades of the past century. A new countywide community reading list will feature titles nominated by libraries across Essex, while the Read On app will host reading challenges to inspire adults to discover new books.
The Agatha Christie exhibition is now touring Essex libraries, celebrating the queen of crime fiction and her enduring influence.
